How does this relate to the Kīpahulu CBSFA?
Kīpahulu Moku was designated as a Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) in March 2023. The Maui Hikina Huliāmahi initiative is comprised of East Maui fishers and community groups who have been doing makai management in their areas for years. Many of the MHH proposed regulations are inspired by and in alignment with Kīpahuluʻs CBSFA. Our goal is to kōkua all of East Maui! What is the role of the Network with this Initiative?
Maui Hikina Huliāmahi is an initiative of East Maui fishers and residents focused on community-led planning for regional makai management across the four moku of East Maui. The Network serves as the umbrella for the regional council, as requested, working with East Maui community groups to plan and promote the Maui Hikina Huliāmahi process to establish consensus for marine resource management planning. The Network hopes to spur community conversations within/among different moku in Maui Nui for regional cohesion of marine resource management and contribute local community perspectives and solutions in understanding and navigating climate change adaptation in rapidly changing marine ecosystems. |

HO'ONOHONOHO: GOALS & OBJECTIVES
KUMU KĀNĀWAI: CODE OF CONDUCT
The Kumu Kanawai, or Code of Conduct are not rules, but rather informal fishing practices grounded in traditional subsistence ʻohana values and customs. We’d like to see everyone harvesting in Maui Hikina follow and respect these common sense pono fishing practices that maintain healthy, regenerative, and sustainable populations of nearshore resources.
