MAUI HIKINA HULIĀMAHI

"We're all family across all the mokus of East Maui. We all have the same issues.
We all need to work together." - Uncle John Lind, Kīpahulu 'Ohana

Maui Hikina Huliāmahi is an initiative of the Maui Nui Makai Network and partners, focused on community-led planning for regional makai (marine) management across the four moku of East Maui: Ko‘olau, Hāna, Kīpahulu, & Kaupō.
The process began in 2019, when a small group of East Maui communities expressed their commitment to work together to manage their beloved places.

They each participated in workshops following the Network's Mālama I Ke Kai Guide where they developed makai management plans and together wrote the East Maui Ho‘omau:
Through this process commonalities across communities were discovered, laying the foundation for thinking about makai planning and management on a regional scale.

Together, we are working to involve more communities throughout these moku to gather ‘ike (knowledge) to develop an inclusive management plan grounded in cultural and traditional knowledge and sound science that will ensure healthy marine resources for generations to come.

‘O Maui Hikina Kākou!
We are East Maui!
Ko‘olau, Hāna, Kīpahulu, Kaupō.
We work together to honor our kūpuna, future generations, and lāhui. We strive for a life rooted in sustainability ensuring an abundance of resources. We protect and preserve our communities’ traditions. From mauka to makai, our forests, streams, and ocean are full of life that feeds and empowers our families. As one ‘ohana, we celebrate each others’ commonalities and differences, committed to learn, share, and support all our efforts to mālama ‘āina. Unified, we are stronger, more efficient, knowledgable, compassionate, and resilient.
In this, we honor our Hā.
‘O Maui Hikina Kākou!
We are East Maui!
