EMPOWER COMMUNITY ACTION

Mālama I Ke Kai:
Community Action Guide

The Network developed a free, step-by-step guide for community-based marine management planning using a participatory process that honors community needs and knowledge. For community folks wanting to care for their resources in an organized way, the MIKK Guide serves as both a facilitator’s guide and a participant workbook to help you develop and implement a written Community Action Plan for your area. Download the MIKK Guide and explore examples of Community Action Plans here.

Mālama I Ke Kai:
Workshops

When requested, the Network will facilitate Mālama I Ke Kai workshop series for multiple community groups in a region with the desired outcome of a Community Action Plan for each community. Developing this plan includes creating a community's vision, values, project description, targets to mālama, threats for the area, and management actions. If you would like the Network to help your community develop a Community Action Plan by going through the MIKK Guide process, please contact us!

Maui Hikina Huliāmahi

Maui Hikina Huliāmahi is an initiative of East Maui fishers and residents focused on community-led planning for regional makai management across the four moku of East Maui. The Network serves as the umbrella for the regional council, as requested, working with East Maui community groups to plan and promote the Maui Hikina Huliāmahi process to establish consensus for marine resource management planning. Learn more about the Maui Hikina Huliāmahi Initiative here.

Local & International Advocacy

The Network seeks to advocate for community and Network interests with key decision-makers, governmental bodies, and representatives. We attend events at the Hawaiʻi State Legislature, write letters of support, provide travel to Members to attend key events like BLNR meetings, and support Network Members pursuing state rules for marine management designations. As an NGO, we engage in international advocacy as it pertains to the Kumulipo. Learn more about our stance of Deep Sea Mining here.

Protect Community Data

When gathering data in collaboration with partners, including scientists, resource managers, and government agencies, our Alaka'i Members have learned to develop a Data Sharing Agreement and follow Research Collaboration Principles to prioritize the protection and respect of community knowledge and cultural values. Learn more about Data Sharing here.
