Moi, or Pacific threadfin (Polydactylus sexfilis), are coveted food fish in Hawai'i, once reserved only for chiefs in ancient Hawai'i. It is one of the relatively few Hawaiian fishes to undergo sex reversal, changing from male to female by the time it reaches about 10 inches in length. Many of our Network members work to protect moi populations in their areas through outreach and education, since in addition to the State's closed season for harvesting moi from June to August, spawning cycles can vary across locations.
