WHO WE ARE

E ola ke kai, e ola kakou.
As the ocean thrives, so do we.

'Ōlelo No'eau

Aloha! We are the Maui Nui Makai Network.

We are a group of community and partner organizations across Maui Nui (Maui, Lāna'i, Moloka'i, and Kaho'olawe) who are exerting our kuleana (responsibility) to care for the ocean in a way that honors our kūpuna (ancestors), and the traditional and cultural practices of our places. We work to protect and restore healthy coastal and marine ecosystems for the people of Maui Nui using powerful place-based, collaborative strategies. Our Network was started in February 2013 after community leaders from across Maui Nui came together asking: 'Do you want to form a network so we can connect and share lessons learned with each other?' The Network includes 9 community group Alaka'i and Haumana Members that do amazing work in their own areas across Maui Nui for big changes collectively, with the technical support of 4 Kāko'o Members and with the generous financial support from Kōkua Members. Scroll down and take a moment to get to know them!

ALAKA'I MEMBERS

Our Alaka'i Members are community groups caring for the ʻāina, actively managing a coastal area in Maui Nui, and currently engaged in the Network. Many of these groups have been managing their sites for years, some groups working for over 20 years, and while no two sites are alike, their conservation values overlap and unite them.

KĀKO'O MEMBERS

The role of these organizations is like that of crustose coralline algae, the pink algae that cements coral reefs together. They are active participants in the Network, handling coordination and providing technical expertise, which allows the passion and commitment of our Alaka'i Members to drive everything forward.
